Stanhill Farm News!
From the 21st February – 1st March it is Real Bread Week! This is an international celebration of real bread and the people who make it. It is time to kick the additive-laden supermarket loaf habit and support your local producers! Real Bread Week is dedicated to promoting the joys and benefits of baking and consuming bread made without additives, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.
The initiative encourages people to understand the difference between commercially produced bread and the “real” bread made using simple, natural ingredients. We love our daily bread, delivered fresh each morning (except Sundays) by our local bakery and offering a wide variety of delicious loaves including Bloomers, Farmhouse, Granary, GI Wholemeal, Sourdough (Fridays only), and not forgetting soft and crusty rolls.
Tuesday 17th February is Shrove Tuesday, so don't forget your pancake essentials! You can buy all your ingredients from the Farm Shop - flour, eggs, milk, and lemons. If you are feeling indulgent you could always pick up some honey and fresh cream!
Pancake Day comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. The fattening ingredients that most people had in their houses in those days were eggs and milk, therefore, a very simple recipe to use up these ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make pancakes!
English Forced rhubarb is now available, sourced from Kent. The rhubarb is kept in complete darkness and pickers then pull the stalks in candlelight, as any exposure to strong light will stop the growth. Forced rhubarb is priced at £12.00 per kilo, more expensive than the rhubarb cut later in the year due to the specialised way in which it is grown and harvested. Our own green top rhubarb grown here on the farm should be ready sometime in March!
Braeburn, Bramley and Cox apples are still English but are being sourced from the wholesale market. We also still have Blood oranges available.
We are currently harvesting sprout stems, sprouts, sprout tops, kale and kalettes. Fresh from the fields, zero food miles and no plastic!
All the above products are available to buy from both our Farm Shop and Click & Collect Service. Subject to availability.
